Movin’ Time

Saturday, October 14th, 2006 at 9:35 pm

I’m in the process of moving to a new host, so there maybe some hiccups along the way. Watch for falling debris.
Update: The move would have been completely smooth if I didn’t have a brain hiccup last night and forget to change permissions after unzipping my backup. Otherwise, things look like they’re working and [...]

When Boredom Comes Alive

Saturday, January 21st, 2006 at 4:08 pm

Have you ever been so bored with your blog, that you’ve felt the urge to stick a stuffed hedgehog at the top of it? No? Em. Ok then. Must just be me.

IMAP Up and Running

Thursday, November 6th, 2003 at 12:07 am

Another upgrade task is complete on Panther - setting up the IMAP server. Man was that a pain in the ass. It was very easy to actually accomplish, but getting the right information was annoyingly tedious.
To make a long story short: follow the general instructions on this page for setting up an IMAP server [...]

Rilke Is Alive

Sunday, November 2nd, 2003 at 5:32 pm

I finally got around to reinstalling Panther on the Powerbook and fixing the problems I had been experiencing with the DBD modules and threaded Perl not compiling correctly in 10.3. This means that MovableType finally works in Panther for me, so once again the site is live-ish.

Remember that your mileage may vary, but for those [...]

Modicum of Thoughts

Thursday, October 16th, 2003 at 12:04 am

I’ve been busy with RL and work to post anything of interest these last couple of weeks. I upgraded the Powerbook to Panther, but downgraded back to Jaguar because I couldn’t get Movable Type to work with the new threaded Perl 5.8.1 and DBI libraries. Granted I didn’t try very hard to make it work. [...]

Dead Channel

Friday, August 29th, 2003 at 10:10 pm

There was some downtime between stations. Everything is settled. We now return to the normally scheduled program already in progress. The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.

CSS Zen And The Art Of Web Site Maintenance

Wednesday, May 14th, 2003 at 4:13 pm

Very accomplished examples of page tomfoolery at the CSS Zen Garden. There was a time when sites like this would push me into a redesign frenzy. These days, I just say ‘neat’, perform the sotto shoulder-shrug then burp Kai and myself.
I derived the design for this site in early 2001 and have changed [...]

Downtime Revisited

Tuesday, March 11th, 2003 at 12:30 am

I had some downtime because I finally upgraded my trusty 5-year old Intel-based motherboard and overclocked Celeron chip to a much snappier AMD model with an Athlon XP chip through various hiccups, fits and starts, and voltage regulator burnouts. Whoo boy what a difference! Now I can write and say absolutely nothing at a [...]

Movin’ On Up

Saturday, January 18th, 2003 at 10:42 pm

Due to a friend visiting from out of town, I moved the site from the desktop machine in the office to my Powerbook. This may or may not be a temporary move, but it was fairly easy to get up and running. The perl processes are actually running faster than on the Windows box, so [...]

Epiphany #345

Tuesday, November 12th, 2002 at 3:04 pm

Epiphany Number #345: Web journaling and blogging is a lot more satisfying when you no longer care about your referrer logs. Just let it flow.

Eating My Own Dog Food

Thursday, October 17th, 2002 at 11:31 pm

I have debated between moving the daily stuff to Movable Type, or to continue adding more features to this hand-rolled CMS at least to the point where it becomes presentable in public. Alas, to paraphrase Larry Wall about the nature of developers, ego and hubris ensure that I continue to eat my own dog food.

Smells Like a Redesign

Thursday, May 9th, 2002 at 4:32 pm

Sniff. That’s the fresh paint smell of a redesign. If you use Mozilla (and you should, unless of course you use Opera), you can still view the site using the previous stylesheet via the ‘Use Style’ menu option. I affectionately call the old style “Blue Steel” in homage to Zoolander.

I’ve had some technical problems

Wednesday, September 19th, 2001 at 12:24 am

I’ve had some technical problems with the site recently. It stopped working when I returned from a wedding in upper Michigan this weekend. The last time it worked was the day of the last post. After a few emails with the site admin, it looks as though the site has stabilized.

New Site Design

Sunday, May 13th, 2001 at 9:33 pm

I finally have the new site design up and running, after much work, consternation and sleepless nights. The backend has been completely redesigned, including a change of web servers. I’m now running Resin instead of Apache because I no longer need the services of mod_perl, and the configuration issues seem a bit easier with resin [...]

My DSL was out for

Tuesday, December 19th, 2000 at 9:44 am

My DSL was out for most of Sunday night, and all of Monday. There was major bitching going on in the Telocity newsgroups about it, the brunt of the criticism was your typical this isp really sucks kind of fare. I definitely agreed with the majority of the opinions, but having visited some major data [...]
